As a younger sister to a graffiti artist I was always surrounded by the culture and the lingering worry that my brother would get caught one night and not return home therefore my issue is the use of prison for graffiti. I am passionate about this issue because prisons are already overpopulated institutions that need to worry about actual criminals and not artist. This issue matters because there have been stories all over the news where young artist are getting arrested and given unfair sentences over graffiti. I believe that the prison system should worry more about the rehabilitation of criminals such as murderers, and drug addicts rather than that of artist. Through this project I hope I can inform people on the use of prison for graffiti and to really show people that graffiti is art that betters the city and the communities. Not only communities here in the US but communities all over the world.
The use of prison for graffiti crimes is unfair because these institutions are already overpopulated and need to focus on the rehabilitation of real criminals and not artist – there are better alternatives to how graffiti should be approached rather than incarceration.
